(U P) As a sort of guarantee to my tournament partner Jimmy Thom son that 1 would be at my very worst form when we tee off to morrow in Bng $3000 Pro Amateur open I took a final tune up today over the Rancho Santa course My playing partners represent ed nearly everything but golf One of them was Ty Cobb stilt the best baseball player I ever saw One of them was Clarence Budfngton Kelland the novelist whose tee shots make you understand xvhere he got the character of Scatter good Baines One of them was Grantland Rice probably the surest man on a fourth putt in America Another was Broderick Crawford the man who created the role of Lenny in Mice and Men and another was reddie Corcoran tournament manager of the A We established numerous re cords on our round The first re cord we bagged was on the second hole when Cobb surpassed the number of hits he had made in 24 years in the major leagues On this hole he struck at the ball for the 4442nd time On the fifth hole Mr Kelland perfected what the late Ring Lard ner said was the hardest ami most spectacular shot in golf an ex plosion shot off the tee The ball went straight up in the air far higher than either of the unshaven Picards ever got in a balloon and for the first time in the history of golf a man was playing his second back of the ladies tee It is no ex aggeration to say that any adult and conscientious hen could have teed up and laid an egg farther than Mr Kelland hit his tee shot On the seventh hole I did my bit for our record breaking four some Using a brassie from a good lie I dug up a divot that xvas so large and so life like that a hunts man in nearby woods mistook it for an armadillo and let it have both barrels ft was not until he came over to claim the pelt for mounting purposes that he dis covered he had drilled a bit of Rancho Santa turf right be tween the eyes On the fifteenth hole Mr Craw ford with a cry of we mice or are we attempted to cut off the curve of a dog leg Needing only a drive of 400 yards he whammed into the ball or the first 125 yards it looked as If he might succeed Then like a strick en mallard the ball dropped into a swamp in which no xvhite man had ever set foot This did not daunt Crawford because he is not a man to lose a new re paint ball without a search Taking his snake kitbag from his caddy and with a quick bite of the jerked beef which he always carries Crawford moved into the swamp As far as we knoxv he is still there After an hour of xvait ing and after there was no an swer to distress flares sent up by Mr Kelland we moved on We can only hope that Broderick found a friendly tribe and adjust ing himself to their rites was made welcome It not and if he fell victim to their poisoned darts all xve can say is that 240 pounds of stew is being cooked some where in the swamp tonight Mr Corcoran as tournament manager of the A and whose association is normally with the Nelsons Woods Guldahls Littles and Sneads was distressed and bewildered by the whole thing Only 14 over par going to the six teenth hole Mr Corcoran was a bit on the sneery side Too he was the only man with a par and had the match gone 36 holes I have a sneaking feeling that he xvould have been unbearable STATE BATTLES LONG ISLAND Spartans Play In Madison Square Garden Double Header Tonight (By United Press) The Michigan State basketball team goes in the cage spotlight tonight in a a late hour for the sole purpose of arranging a New York bout that would decide at Inst who actually is middleweight champion of the world Uncle Mike sought a decisive conflict between Ceferino Garcia who is recognized as king of the 160 pounders by the New York and California commissions and Al Hostak of Seattle who is recog nized by the National Boxing as sociation Uncle Mike wanted this brax i to be staged in New York which means under promo tion The first persons Jacobs saw when he descended from his sky chariot at Chicago was Nate Drux man the Seattle promoter who has contractual rights upon Hos tak's services And after Uncle Mike bandied three or four para graphs of conversation with Mr Druxman he shivered and said me a ticket for Miami right away I crave tropical So Promoter Jacobs at midnight grabbed a Miami plane To the press he explained that he had to make preliminary arrangemeuts for the Billy Conn Gus Lesnevlch light heavyweight championship fight at Miami on eb 28 Jaoobs lees South But Chicago reporters insist that Jacobs fled south after Druxman told him that he was sure Hostak's manager Eddie Marino would con sent to a New York title tilt if Light Heavyweight Champion Billy Conn would first defend his crown against Hostak at Seattle under Druxman's promotion Druxman the only promoter whom Jacobs admires and fears had touched Uncle Mike to the quick The middleweight situa tion is a sore spot under Jacob's gold plated armour Uncle Mike knew welterweight champion Henry Armstrong is scheduled to tight Garcia for the middleweight crown on eb 22 Unquestionably Jacobs' negotia tions with Druxman are part of his campaign to prevent that Gar cia Armstrong brawl Jacobs had both Armstrong and Garcia under contract for their title activities Both Armstrong and Garcia want to go through with the Los Ange les fight But Jacobs says take Garcia into court and get an injunction before I let that fight go Walter Johnson Puts Hat In Ring Eyes
